| The 2009 Jamboree Welcomed Philly QB & ESPN Analyst Ron Jaworski |
The Portsmouth Sports Club was pleased to welcome Ron Jaworski as the speaker for the 2009 Jamboree, the club's 63rd, held March 11, 2009 at the Renaissance Hotel.
Jaworski, one of pro football’s most resilient quarterbacks ever, played seventeen years in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams (1973-76), Philadelphia Eagles (1977-86), Miami Dolphins (1987-88) and Kansas City Chiefs (1989).
"Jaws" led the Eagles advanced to the NFC Playoffs in 1978 and 1979. In 1980, "Jaws" led the Eagles to a 12-4 record, the NFC Championship, and their first-ever berth in a Super Bowl (Super Bowl XV vs. the Oakland Raiders). Ron Jaworski finished the 1980 season as the No. 1 rated passer in the NFC.
Currently, he is an analyst for two weekly NFL programs on ESPN--Edge NFL Match-Up and NFL Prime Monday.
Earlier in the day, at the annual Jamboree Luncheon, a packed house at the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame heard from former NFL player and local educator Charlie Stukes. Stukes was played college ball at Maryland State College and was drafted by the Baltimopre Colts, for whom in played in two Super Bowls.
At the evening event, the Sports Club presented severak awards, including high school and college coach of the year, Athletes of the Year, and the J Herbery Simpson Sports Person of the year. The Sportsclub also handed out thousands of dollars in scholarships to local students.
